Description
The National High School Center’s Summer Institute, "Advancing High School Student Success: Building Systems of Support," was held on June 11-13, 2007, in Washington, DC. Designed specifically for the Regional Comprehensive Centers (RCCs) and the states they serve, our conference provided the latest research and useful practices regarding pressing issues in high school improvement. The National High School Center invited teams of four from each RCC to attend (Executive Director of the RCC, high school liaison, and up to two state representatives per RCC). The agenda for the Institute was based on the expressed needs of the Regional Comprehensive Centers, covered the National High School Center’s three focus strands (High School Readiness, Rigorous Content Mastery, and Post-secondary Pathways), and represented the priority topic areas on which we have focused during Years 1 and 2. Requested topics that were covered included: developing effective systems of support; adolescent literacy; dropout prevention; ninth grade transition; and effective strategies to serve students with disabilities. Ample time was also made available for RCCs and states to have an opportunity to learn from one another.
