Center Overview

The National Center on Educational Outcomes provides technical assistance on improving results for students with disabilities by increasing their participation rates in high quality assessment and accountability systems, improving the quality of assessments in which they participate, improving the capacity of States to meet data collection requirements, and strengthening accountability for results.

Methods

NCEO and its collaborators, the National Association of State Directors of Special Education (NASDSE) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), work with states and our research and technical assistance partners to achieve better understanding of current issues in the field, to identify policies and practices that ensure all students benefit from State and local assessment and accountability efforts, and to share this information with those whose work has an effect on policy and practice, and who are affected by it. The Center’s program of services is organized into five separate areas: (1) needs assessments and information gathering activities, (2) technical assistance and dissemination activities to improve the participation of students with disabilities in assessments and accountability systems, (3) technical assistance activities to improve the capacity of States to meet data collection requirements, (4) collaboration and other leadership activities, and (5) other activities. These activity areas are not separate in implementation: the process and outcomes of each informs and affects the others. Sometimes the identification of the need for specific information gathering activities comes from collaboration or TA experiences; and these experiences are in turn shaped by emerging research.
