Center Overview

The National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities, NICHCY, serves the nation as a central source of information on: • research-based information on effective educational practices, • disabilities in infants, toddlers, children, and youth, • IDEA and No Child Left Behind (as it relates to children with disabilities), • products and services of OSEP’s TA&D projects, and • national, regional, and state agencies, disability organizations, professional and parent groups focused on the needs of children with disabilities. NICHCY focuses on support to states and local entities in building their capacity to improve early intervention, educational and transitional services, and results for children with disabilities and their families, and to address systemic-change goals and priorities. NICHCY brings research-based information and assistance to practice, in order to help states meet outcome indicators and show continuous improvement. NICHCY provides information in both English and Spanish.

Methods

The Center has (a) developed a system for the collection, organization, and dissemination of research-based information, (b) established a website, (c) developed a database of research-based educational interventions for students with disabilities, and (d) established strategies to disseminate information to underrepresented populations. NICHCY provides information about specific disabilities and educational services for infants and toddlers and students with disabilities, prepares digests and other products summarizing research, maintains a database of products of all OSEP’s TA&D projects, facilitates the activities of OSEP’s Proposed Product Advisory Board, prepares annual directories of OSEP discretionary projects, develops products on IDEA and NCLB, and participates in programs and activities to collect and disseminate information and promote networking among organizations addressing IDEA. NICHCY’s services, website, and many products are available in both English and Spanish.
